GEDORE red Passenger Car Tools

Anyone working on cars — whether in their own garage or in a small workshop — faces the same question for every project: Which tool is essential for this specific task, and where is standard equipment sufficient? Every vehicle assembly has its own requirements in terms of geometry and force transmission. GEDORE red offers exactly the tools you need for wheel changes, engine timing and a wide range of fastening tasks — for locking, loosening or tightening components.

The most common work on a vehicle involves the bodywork, interior and wheels. Accessibility and component protection determine the choice of tool.

  • Bodywork and attachments: Installing and removing headlights, bumpers or interior trim requires deep sockets as well as precise TX and XZN profiles. The XZN profile is particularly common in automotive applications because its star-shaped design allows high torque to be applied to the fastener.
  • Wheel changes: When loosening and tightening wheel bolts, standard sockets can often make contact with the rim edges. GEDORE red impact sockets feature a material-friendly plastic coating. They protect alloy wheels from scratches, while the torque wrench ensures precise tightening in accordance with the manufacturer’s specifications.

Taking Control of Engine Timing

Engine timing locking tools — also known as engine setting tools or timing tools — are mechanical special tools that play an important role in engine repairs. They are used to lock the moving main components of an internal combustion engine, particularly the camshaft and crankshaft, in an exactly defined position relative to one another.

Since almost every vehicle manufacturer uses its own geometries, these tools are generally designed for specific vehicles. GEDORE red offers precisely fitting sets for common engine types, providing a reliable alternative to expensive original manufacturer tools (OEM tools).

Precise Fit on the Component

GEDORE red passenger car special tools are developed based on OEM specifications (Original Equipment Manufacturer). This means that their dimensions, tolerances and fixing points correspond precisely to the original tools used by automotive manufacturers. When locking a camshaft or pressing out a bearing, the tool fits into the intended holes without play. This prevents sensitive cast aluminium components in the engine block from breaking and protects sensors from damage caused by slipping tools.

Answers to the Most Frequently Asked Questions

For most tasks in an auto repair shop, a 3/8“ ratchet is the top choice: 3/8” socket wrenches cover most of the socket sizes and profiles used on vehicles, and the 3/8" ratchet often fits even in tight spaces.
For DIY projects, a ½" ratchet is recommended as an all-around tool that provides sufficient leverage for the vast majority of applications.

As a precision measuring instrument, a torque wrench should be calibrated at least once a year or after 5,000 operating cycles – whichever comes first. Immediate inspection is required after a fall or mechanical damage. GEDORE offers this service in its own DAkkS-accredited calibration laboratory in accordance with DIN EN ISO/IEC 17025:2018.

Yes. After use, the torque wrench should be returned to the lowest scale value. If the spring remains under tension permanently, its preload may change and affect measurement accuracy. This does not apply to versions that do not use a conventional compression spring.

With release-type torque wrenches, such as click-type wrenches, an audible and perceptible click indicates that the set value has been reached. As soon as this signal is triggered, the applied force must be stopped immediately. Continuing to tighten after the release can result in excessive torque and damage the screw connection.

The decisive factors are the required torque range, the square drive and the available installation space. The torque value to be set should be in the middle range of the scale, ideally between 20 and 80% of the maximum measurement range. GEDORE offers torque wrenches with square drives from 1/4 to 3/4 inch for a wide range of applications.

Yes, specific sets such as the R68903011 include impact sockets designed specifically for this purpose. These are made of heavy-duty chromium-molybdenum steel and can withstand the extreme impact loads of pneumatic or cordless impact wrenches. Important when changing a tire: Be sure to use a torque wrench to tighten the bolts.

Modern engines from VW, BMW, or Ford do not tolerate any deviations in timing. Universal locking devices can slip or may not fit exactly into the designated holes. An engine-specific kit secures the camshaft and crankshaft with absolutely no play in the exact OEM position.
