ROTBAND-PLUS for Hammers: Secure Connections and Protected Work
A hammer transfers high forces from the head to the workpiece with every blow. These forces do not act exclusively in the longitudinal direction. Angled strikes, vibrations and missed blows can also place strain on the connection between the head and handle. A reliable handle attachment is therefore an essential part of the tool’s design.
The ROTBAND-PLUS system combines the advantages of a wooden handle with additional mechanical securing. The wooden handle connects to the hammer head and can dampen vibrations due to the properties of the material. The additional fastening elements stabilize the position of the head. The long steel sleeve protects the particularly vulnerable section of the handle directly below the head.
Where Does the System Come From?
ROTBAND-PLUS was developed in the tool division of the GEDORE Group. The system was designed as a secure handle attachment for striking tools and is used in various GEDORE hammer designs.
The name refers to the interaction between fastening and handle protection. Unlike a simple wedge connection, the system does not rely on a single expansion wedge. The ring wedge, retaining plate, screw connection and steel sleeve work together to perform different tasks: they secure the head, distribute forces and protect the handle in the transition area.
The design is matched to the relevant hammer. Replacement handles and fastening components must therefore be selected to suit the specific hammer model. An arbitrary handle or combination of wedges and plates is not an equivalent replacement for a coordinated system.
What Does the System Consist Of?
Depending on the design, the ROTBAND-PLUS system for hammers consists of the following components:
- Hammer head: The forged head absorbs the impact energy and transfers it to the workpiece.
- Wooden handle: The handle connects the hammer head to the grip area. Hickory or ash handles are commonly used.
- Steel handle protection sleeve: The long, hardened sleeve is positioned below the hammer head and protects the handle against damage, particularly in the event of angled strikes or missed blows.
- Ring wedge: The ring wedge expands the handle inside the hammer eye and distributes the clamping force more evenly than a simple flat wedge.
- Retaining plate: The plate rests against the end of the handle and provides additional support for securing the connection.
- Wood screw or screw connection: The screw connection fixes the retaining plate in place and complements the wedge connection.
What Are the Benefits?
The main benefit is the additional securing of the connection between the hammer head and wooden handle. The ring wedge distributes the clamping force throughout the handle, while the retaining plate and screw connection provide additional support for the connection area. This reduces the risk of the hammer head loosening during intended use.
The long handle protection sleeve protects the handle in the area where missed blows can cause damage particularly easily. This can extend the service life of the hammer and helps preserve the functionality of the handle. At the same time, the wooden handle contributes to controlled handling and effective vibration damping.
ROTBAND-PLUS does not replace a visual inspection. Before working, check the hammer head, handle, sleeve and fastening components for cracks, deformation, looseness or other damage. A hammer with a damaged handle or loose head must be taken out of service and professionally repaired or replaced.
