Shipbuilding and Maintenance
GEDORE Solutions for Shipbuilding
The same technical challenges arise time and again during daily work in shipyards, on ships and in dry docks. The problems are real, tolerances are tight and time pressure is enormous—after all, every unplanned period in port costs real money.
GEDORE is the specialist for mechanical and torque-controlled hand tools, from precise torque tightening to non-destructive dismantling. Our tool solutions are tailored directly to the requirements of maritime trades.
Marine Mechanics and Mechanical Engineers: Power Tools for the Engine Room
The engine room is the heart of the ship — and the most demanding workplace on steel and at sea. Everyday work is challenging. When tightening cylinder heads, marine diesel engines require torque values far beyond what one person can achieve with a conventional torque wrench. The GEDORE DREMOPLUS ALU torque multiplier mechanically multiplies the input torque several times, with a defined reduction ratio, in a traceable manner and in accordance with applicable standards.
Bearings, shafts and couplings seized by salt water can also become a problem. Anything that has been exposed to salt water for years cannot simply be loosened by hand. Mechanical and hydraulic GEDORE pullers, along with specialist separation tools, generate targeted axial force without heat or damage to the bearing races. This enables non-destructive dismantling even in cases of severe corrosion.
Structural Mechanics and Pipefitters: Robustness in Hull Construction
Hull construction and pipe system installation require both brute force and precision: heavy steel profiles, flange connections exposed to vibration and access points that leave no room for manoeuvre. Confined deck sections and heavy bolted connections are subject to vibration, making standard tools with long levers unsuitable. What you need are solidly constructed ratchets with high torque output and slim wrenches for angled access. GEDORE provides both:
- Heavy-duty socket assortments in 3/4" and 1", such as the No. 3293 U-2 ratchet series, are designed for the most extreme loads and transmit high torque without material fatigue.
- Flat combination wrenches with an optimised design, such as No. 7, enable secure force application even in confined spaces and angled positions. They are ideal for pipe flanges and connections at hard-to-reach deck penetrations.
Marine electricians face a separate set of requirements, working in damp environments with sensitive onboard electronics. Working on live equipment makes VDE safety tools essential. VDE-insulated pliers and screwdriving tools, tested in accordance with EN 60900 up to 1,000 V, provide maximum user protection when working on navigation systems, onboard fuses and cable trays.

Answers to the Most Frequently Asked Questions
Welding equipment and specialist knives for maritime fibres or wire ropes are outside GEDORE’s core portfolio. For these areas, we recommend specialised manufacturers. GEDORE is your partner for mechanical and torque-controlled hand tools.
Robust workshop trolleys with assortments tailored to the job, torque solutions from 0.04 to 54,000 Nm, as well as striking open-ended spanners from the 133 series and striking ring spanners from the 306 series. For over 100 years, GEDORE has stood for high-quality tools, durable solutions and reliable spare parts service – even under the toughest conditions.
VDE tools are tested for up to 1,000 V AC in accordance with EN 60900 and feature multilayer insulation. In shipbuilding, they protect electricians from electric shocks when working on onboard electrical systems, navigation systems and power distribution equipment in wet and damp conditions.
A torque multiplier is a mechanical reduction gearbox that converts a low input torque into a very high output torque. It is used when flange or bolted connections require tightening torques that cannot be achieved or reproduced with a conventional wrench, for example on the cylinder heads of marine diesel engines.
For typical heavy-duty bolted connections in shipyards, such as flanges, keel bolts and pipe connections, 3/4" drives are recommended for medium heavy-duty applications, while 1" drives are suitable for extreme high-load applications.
