Working in the Energy Industry: Challenges for People and Tools
Three industries, three environments, three sets of requirements—and a clear GEDORE answer for each. Wind power, electrical engineering and solar installation place different demands on your tools: from cordless high-torque tools at dizzying heights and VDE-tested torque precision on switchgear to millimetre-precise module fastening on rooftops. Here you will find the solutions that really matter in your everyday work.
Wind Power and Installation: Extreme Heights and Enormous Torques
The construction and maintenance of wind turbines—both onshore and offshore—combine heavy-duty steel construction with dizzying heights. Every gram of tool weight matters during the climb. Once at the top, absolute reliability is essential in wind, salt spray and changing weather conditions.
At such heights, tools must be lightweight, securely attached and, above all, function reliably when flange connections on the tower and in the nacelle need to be tightened to the exact centimetre with several thousand newton metres. Solving both challenges at once is the real task in work at height.
For extreme mechanical loads in the wind energy and offshore sectors, such as those found at tower flanges, rotor blades or yaw drives, the GEDORE LDA3 and LDA3 Solution Core cordless tools deliver up to 8,000 Nm of cordless power. Without heavy hydraulic power units, they provide maximum mobility in confined nacelles or at sea, while the 360° rotating drive head ensures ergonomic operation. When dealing with bolts encrusted with salt water, the brushless motor delivers substantial breakaway torque, while the sunlight-readable display shows the status precisely at all times. The Solution version controls torque-and-angle tightening sequences precisely, releases the reaction arm automatically and digitally documents every operation for demanding offshore safety audits.
Electrical Engineering and Power Grids: Working on High-Voltage Equipment
Electrical engineers responsible for industrial systems carry daily responsibility for grid safety. When installing switchgear, there is no room for inferior tools. Terminal blocks and busbars require precise torque specifications. Torque that is too low can result in contact resistance and cable fires, while torque that is too high can damage terminals and create unstable connections. At the same time, every tool used must withstand extreme mechanical loads without the insulation developing even the smallest crack.
GEDORE TORCOFIX VDE torque wrenches are individually tested up to 1,000 volts in accordance with DIN EN 60900. The permanently applied dip insulation reliably protects you from electric shocks in an emergency. We can even maintain this protection during our torque service. Recalibration is carried out in our own DAkkS-accredited laboratory without damaging the insulation.
Solar Technology: Clean Connections from the Very First Step
Correctly stripping and crimping PV cables may sound routine, but it determines whether a system will operate reliably for decades. Using the right crimping and stripping tools creates the conditions for clean, durable connections. With the GEDORE Multi-Cable Knife 4529, you can cleanly strip PV round cables from 4–28 mm. It automatically switches from a circumferential cut to a longitudinal cut without having to remove the knife, and features an integrated stripping function for flexible and solid conductors.
For the subsequent connection technology, two specialised crimping pliers are available: the GEDORE 8157 precisely and consistently crimps uninsulated cable lugs and tubular cable lugs up to 16 mm²—ideal for grounding cables and connection terminals. The GEDORE 8142 handles insulated cable lugs with a precision ratchet mechanism for consistently reliable crimp connections wherever additional protection against accidental contact is required.

Ready for Your Tool?
In addition to crimping tools, VDE-insulated tools and torque wrenches, we offer many other tools to make your everyday work in the plant or during installation easier.
Answers to the most frequently asked questions
GEDORE uses a double-offset, induction-hardened serration in the jaws, with the teeth angled against the direction of rotation. This creates a self-locking effect within the tool: the pliers grip more firmly under load—the more force you apply, the more secure the grip becomes. On wet stainless-steel pipes, this is not just a matter of convenience but of safety.
Yes—and this is not merely a recommendation; it is essential for maintaining long-term accuracy. With all mechanical torque wrench models featuring an internal coil spring, such as the TORCOFIX VDE, you must turn the spring back to the lowest scale value after use. This prevents spring fatigue and maintains calibration accuracy throughout the tool’s service life.
The tools are individually tested at 10,000 volts in a water bath at the factory. Light surface dirt does not cause any damage and can simply be cleaned. However, as soon as deep cuts, cracks or the underlying yellow base material become visible, the insulation has been compromised. In this case, remove the tool from service immediately and replace it. No compromises.
No—and for good reason. Standard combination wrenches are designed to transfer torque through pulling force, not impact energy. Hammer blows can cause them to splinter or break, creating a risk of injury. For seized flanges in pipeline construction and civil engineering, you must use GEDORE striking ring wrenches, such as No. 133. These are specifically designed and tested for this type of impact energy.
