Power Pliers

The GEDORE Power Pliers range

Higher cutting and clamping forces with less effort? That's possible. With the functional principle of Power Pliers from GEDORE.

The GEDORE designers make use of the physical equation of moment when actuating a pair of pliers. Unlike other pliers, pliers in the power pliers range have an eccentrically mounted centre of rotation in the inserted joint. The hand torque applied above the pivot point is thus transferred particularly strongly to the cutting edge. Due to the highly optimised effective length, this design increases the cutting force. This guarantees a power saving of 35% compared to other pliers models. The gripping surface, which is shifted to the rear, additionally enhances the cutting force.

From Austria to the whole world

In the 1980s, GEDORE Austria was developed into a competence centre for pliers production. Since then, production of the GEDORE pliers range has developed into the main focus of the site in Birkfeld (Austria) and is being consistently expanded.

The current range of pliers produced in Birkfeld extends from the smallest telephone pliers to the largest pipe wrenches. A high vertical range of manufacture, many years of experience in the design of operating equipment and new products as well as a location organised according to modern lean methods form the basis for innovative, new products of outstanding quality, which are delivered all over the world from Styria, the green heart of Austria.

Manufacture of pliers

You have to rely on pliers. They should grip securely, relieve the user, hold as long as possible and not damage the workpiece. The functionality, quality and user-friendliness of a pair of pliers is determined not only by the design but also, and above all, by the production process.

This is why GEDORE relies on the best steel qualities, modern machines and environmentally friendly production processes. The latest CNC machines and optimised automated production lines with grinding robots are used in the machine park. Nevertheless, the proven blacksmith's craft and the irreplaceable knowledge of GEDORE employees remain essential components of production. The complex production process, which begins with a glowing drop-forged blank, continues with special treatments, fine machining and a manual finish, and ends with strict quality control.

Hot forged in the double forging die. The excess burr is removed under an eccentric press.

The blanks are "normalised" to abtain an even finer-grain, more uniform structure with optimum strength. After descaling, the blanks are calibrated for the following work steps.

The head is machined in a CNC-controlled machining centre. The rivet hole is drilled and counter-bored. The joint clearance and the outer contour are milled. The geometry of the joint area and the coarse and fine toothing are broached.

The joint faces are precision milled. the pliers head takes on its final form.

The moving and fixed pliers legs are riveted together. A smooth-moving joint with no play is the essential requirement fpr safe one-handed operation.

In a chamber hardening kiln, the pliers are hardened in a protective gas atmosphere, quenched in oil and finally annealed. The design of the hardening kiln ensures that the process gases are uniformly distributed, which has a positive effect on the desired material properties.

The cutting edges of GEDORE pliers are once again hardened. The additional hardness that this achieves ensures a good cutting performance and a long life between sharpening.

The pliers head is grounded to achieve a flush geometry.

The surface is cleaned by sand blasting. The removal of scale and grease is necessary for the follow-on electroplating process.

Nickel-plated and matt-chrome-plated to prevent dazzle. The electrolytically deposited nickel coating provides the corrosion protection. The electroplated chrome improves the look and gives the pliers a perfect finish.

The pliers in TL version are painted black by a robot with water-soluble paint. The 2-component handles of the pliers in JC design are pressed on and securely bonded.

Jaws, cutting edges and joint

As extensive and versatile as the GEDORE range of pliers is, you are spoilt for choice. Depending on the challenge and application, the choice of pliers can have a significant influence on the result. The amount of work, time and physical strain are minimised by choosing the right pliers. Therefore it is important to know the features and functions of the pliers and their components and to answer the question of the questions: do I want to cut, separate, grip, hold, pinch, strip or crimp?

Pliers jaws - 3 basic forms

Pliers jaws are available in three different basic shapes: flat, flat-round and round. Pliers with flat jaws are suitable for holding workpieces firmly. Flat-round jaws, such as those frequently found in telephone pliers, often have a narrow tip. They are therefore predestined for use in the mechanical and electronic sector. Those who have to deform or bend, on the other hand, choose pliers with round jaws, such as serrated round pliers.

The three basic forms are supplemented by further special forms. Cable cutters, crimping pliers or stripping pliers, for example, support the user in specified trades and are optimized in form and function for certain jobs.

Cutting edges of pliers - position, form and function

Pliers cutting edges differ in their position and shape. Both characteristics are standardised via DIN ISO 5742, the requirements of which GEDORE fulfils without exception, and in some cases even exceeds.

Pliers with raised cutting edges are particularly suitable for flush cutting. Side cutters and end cutting nippers are also suitable for flush cutting. These two forms are best chosen if the cutting process is repeated frequently; they are significantly more energy-efficient and therefore more efficient in use. If the cutting edges are on the inside, flush cutting is not possible.

Depending on the function and application, a distinction is made between the position of the cutting edges and their shape. Cutting edges without facet, can be found, for example, in pliers for flush cutting of plastics. The required cutting pressure is not very high and soft material such as plastic is not accidentally squashed during cutting. In the electronics sector, the cutting edges have a slight cutting bevel (small facet). Cutting hard types of wire is easiest to handle with cutting edges that have a cutting bevel (facet). The cutting bevel extends the service life of the cutting edge and optimally encloses the hard wire.

The mechanical connection of the pliers legs

The joint of a pair of pliers plays a decisive role in the transmission of force and determines the mechanical connection between the two legs or parts of the pliers. There are three common types of joint. A distinction is made between a joint that is placed on, inserted or pushed through.

In the case of a fitted joint, both legs of the pliers lie on top of each other and are firmly connected by a groove.

GEDORE often uses an inserted joint in the pliers design. This optimally absorbs the force transmitted by the handle and distributes it to the pliers head. The legs of the pliers interlock.

A joint is said to be inserted when the upper leg of the pliers is slit, so to speak, and the second leg of the pliers can be inserted through it. A groove is usually found at the joint, which at the same time serves as an adjusting device.

The handles of GEDORE pliers

The designation "TL" includes pliers with blue dipped handle sleeves. The material improves the feel of the pliers and reduces the risk of slipping.

Pliers marked with the article designation "JC" have 2-component handles. These handles offer the user additional comfort and safety. They consist of two different plastic components which guarantee a long life and a secure grip in the hand. In front of the joint of the pliers, there is a trapezoidal bulge on each of the two legs of the handle, which acts as a slip guard. The handles are ergonomically designed to fit the curvature of the inside of the hand. This makes it easier to grip and ensures optimum power transmission. By shifting the gripping zone to the end of the handle, the power transmission is even increased, thus improving the cutting performance.

Types of pliers

Universal and water pump pliers

Their shape catches the eye and they can be found in almost every toolbox. Universal and water pump pliers have an adjusting mechanism that makes them indispensable for working on pipes and nuts. Those who attach particular importance to ease of use and functionality will opt for a version that also has a fine adjustment by push button. This allows the pliers to be locked with one hand.

Combination Pliers

Versatile and multifunctional: These are combination pliers. Equipped with raised cutting edges, serrated, flat jaws and an inserted joint, they are robust all-rounders that can easily cope with hard wire in tough continuous use and have a long service life when gripping, holding and cutting. For special applications on pipes or in confined spaces, the GEDORE range of pliers offers special forms of combination pliers.

Side and end cutting pliers

Their main task is already clear from their name. Above all, side and end cutters should fulfil one task safely and reliably: Cutting. Side cutters are suitable for precise cutting and nipping of cables, wires, nails, rubber and plastic. In order to do justice to the different properties of the material to be cut, they are available in versions especially for plastic (without bevel), combined as stripping side cutters or as lever side cutters with extra-strong double joint for hard wire. The wire cutters also belong to the category of side and end cutters.

Flat and round nose pliers

Flat nose pliers, round nose pliers, flat round nose pliers, multiple and telephone pliers and mechanic's pliers. With cutting edge, without cutting edge, straight or angled. Jaws long or short. The range among the flat nose pliers and round nose pliers is versatile.

If the jaws are flat and serrated, the pliers are most useful when holding and bending. If, on the other hand, gripping is more important than holding, flat and round pliers with flat-round or round serrated jaws are more suitable.

Multi-purpose pliers with serrated straight cutting edges and flat-round jaws are most universally applicable. Holding, cutting, stripping, crimping and squeezing are no problem for these pliers.

In the mechanical field, pliers are far more specialised. Since tasks such as holding or gripping in hard-to-reach places, grasping, positioning and releasing round, oval or even angular objects often present the user with special challenges, they are available cranked or angled.
